This tool records contributions to a research dataset. You need a GitHub account that has been invited to collaborate on the repository, and a token for it.

What the token grants, stated plainly. It must be a classic token. Fine-grained tokens can only reach repositories owned by your own account, so one will not work here however it is configured — that is a gap in GitHub, not a setting you have missed.

Your work is held in this browser until you publish it. That is the default, and nothing you record reaches the repository until you press Publish held work. You can switch to publishing as you go, and the tool says which mode you are in at all times.

Once published, it is public and permanent. This repository is open, so a trace is world-readable as soon as it is committed — not at the next edition, and not after review. Whatever you publish includes what you publish by accident: a half-traced channel, a trace you later withdraw, and a note saying you were unsure. Nothing can be unpublished afterwards, which is the whole reason the default is to hold.

Your GitHub username is on every contribution, visible to anyone, and contributed work is credited under your name. That is the arrangement rather than a side effect — but you should know it before you start rather than discover it after.

What you are granting, stated plainly. Traces you publish are released under CC BY 4.0, the same licence this project publishes its dataset under. Anyone may use and redistribute your work, including commercially, provided you are credited — and you are credited by the GitHub username above. You keep the copyright in what you draw; you are giving everyone else permission to use it. If you are contributing work that belongs to an employer or an institution rather than to you, settle that before you publish rather than after.

Kept in this browser only, and sent to api.github.com and nowhere else. There is no server here to send it to.
If your browser autofilled this field, check it. A password manager will fill a masked field with an older saved value, and a stale token looks exactly like a correct one.
